5 Advanced Techniques from a Great Public Speaking Coach

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a public speaking coach is that trying to emulate someone else’s style can be a recipe for disaster.

Many of my clients have come to me with the goal of delivering a high-energy, dynamic presentation, often inspired by the likes of TED talks. However, through our work together, they’ve discovered that their own unique approach – when properly channelled – is often what truly sets them apart and commands attention.

When speakers are able to tap into their authentic voice and style, they’re able to connect with their audience on a deeper level and deliver a more compelling and memorable presentation. This is a lesson that I’ve seen play out time and time again, and it’s one that I try to instil in all of my clients. By embracing their individuality and finding their own unique voice, speakers can unlock their full potential and deliver presentations that truly resonate with their audience.

The Power of Strategic Imperfection

Here’s what most public speaking coaches won’t tell you: perfect delivery often creates distance between you and your audience. Instead, try:

  1. The Reset Technique

When you feel your energy dropping:

  • Take a deliberate sip of water
  • Move to a different spot on stage
  • Ask your audience a question These aren’t just breaks—they’re strategic tools for energy management.
  1. The Pause Portfolio

Different types of pauses for different effects:

  • The “Let that sink in” pause (after key points)
  • The “I’m about to say something important” pause (before key points)
  • The “I’m thinking aloud here” pause (during complex explanations)

The Science of Voice

Some public speaking coaches forget to emphasise: your voice is a precision instrument, not just a volume control. Try these tips:

  • Drop your tone at the end of key statements (creates instant authority)
  • Raise it slightly when building to a crucial point (creates anticipation)
  • Use a slower pace and lower register for critical information (improves retention)
  • Match your breathing to your key points (helps audience processing)

Physical Presence: The 45-Degree Rule

Instead of facing your audience head-on constantly (which can feel confrontational), try this:

  • Position yourself at a 45-degree angle when telling stories
  • Create a “golden triangle” on stage – three points you move between for different parts of your message
  • Step forward deliberately for emphasis, rather than pacing randomly

Think of the stage as a chess board – each position should be strategic and meaningful.

The 3-3-3 Framework

Want to know how TED talk speakers create memorable talks? They usually follow this pattern (whether they realise it or not):

  • 3 key messages (human brain’s natural grouping)
  • 3 supporting points for each (creates rhythm)
  • 3 ways to express each point (story, data, example)

This isn’t just a template – it’s how human attention naturally flows.
